General Book Club Discussion Questions

Questions from Anne Bogel, My Reading Life: A Book Journal, p. 114

  1. What was your initial reaction to reading the book? How did that evolve as you continued to read?

  2. What do you think the title means? Did your understanding of the title change as you read the story? Can you think of a title that’s more suitable?

  3. Did the characters seem real to you? Did you find their thoughts and actions to be believable or relatable? How did they grow and change throughout the course of the story?

  4. What was your favorite scene? Favorite quote?

  5. What specific themes stood out to you? What message do you think the author was trying to get across to the reader?

  6. Could the book have taken place anywhere, or was the setting crucial to the story?

  7. Did the story change the way you think about an event, place, or time?

  8. How did the author structure the book? For example, was the structure based on the timeline, viewpoints, dialogue, or language? How did this affect the story?

  9. How did you feel about the ending? Did the resolution of the book feel right to you?

  10. Did the book change your mind about anything? Give you a new perspective? Prompt you to think about a person or a topic in a new way?
